Children are meant to learn not to earn

By Mridula Bharati

Do a favour, avoid child labour. A child in pain is no gain! Small hands can handle a pen better.”

Child labour refers to the exploitation of children through any form of work that deprives children of their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and is mentally, physically, socially or morally harmful. Such exploitation is prohibited by legislation worldwide, however, these laws do not consider all types of work as child labour - exceptions include work by child artists, family duties and supervised training.

Child employment is a significant problem in most developing nations. Small children under the age of 14 are being forced into work by people of high-class society. They are ignoring the reality that children are the future and hope of the nation. Millions of children are lacking in primary education and are deprived of a proper childhood. These children do not get the opportunity to live a healthy life since they are not delighted physically, intellectually and culturally during childhood.

Childhood is considered to be the best time of one’s life, but unfortunately, this does not hold for some children who struggle through different situations to meet the fundamental needs of life. Most of you are reading this from the comfort of your house, but there are millions of children who have never had lives like us.

There is no reason, there is no excuse. Child labour is child abuse.
